Academy Training It is the mission of the Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy POST to provide the citizens of Idaho with ethical physically and psychologically competent well educated professionally trained career oriented motivated peace officers who are sensitive to the needs of the public Idaho s POST Council requires all peace officers to complete a ten week basic academy and detention officers to complete a five week basic academy The strenuous curriculum focuses on the foundation of knowledge and practical skills necessary to perform the job Upon successful completion of the course a student will be eligible for basic certification as a patrol officer or level I certification as a detention officer Once the academy is completed officers must complete a field training program and satisfactorily complete a probationary period of at least six months in order to become POST certified Patrol Academy Coursework Professional Orientation 7 hours Introduction to the Criminal Justice System 12 5 hours Police and the Law 44 hours Police Practical Skills and Health Fitness 256 hours Police Human Relations 30 hours Investigations 60 hours Patrol Procedures 37 hours Traffic Enforcement 56 hours Administration Examinations 23 hours There is also 83 hours of pre Academy coursework Detention Academy Coursework Jail Standards Procedures 11 hours Detention Legal Issues 34 hours Practical Skills 68 hours Jail Medical Issues 14 hours Human Relations 17 hours Detention Techniques 21 hours Incident Procedures 18 hours Emergency Procedures 13 hours Physical Fitness Wellness 13 hours Administration Examinations 11 hours There is also 40 hours of Jail Training Manual The POST Academy is located at 700 South Stratford Drive Meridian Idaho For more information visit their website at www idaho post org
